Lowry Mill Historical and Archeological Site

Project Overview

The mill site was originally developed in the mid-1800’s by Nathaniel Burge but would burn in the late 1870’s. Within two years, Daniel Lowry rebuilt the mill on the foundation of the original mill, and it became a major business hub for the Northwest Georgia region with travelers taking advantage of the mill’s operations. Positioned next to one of the south’s oldest remaining wooded covered bridges, the mill operated as late as the mid-1900’s until the structure fell into disrepair and eventually collapsed into its foundation. Pennant Construction Management was began one of its most unusual historic preservation projects by leading an archeological study of the property, a preservation of historic artifacts and a stabilization of the grand stone foundation of the mill. The initial challenges were obvious as the mill is positioned in the basin of Euharlee Creek and possesses heavy ground water pressure causing the excavated site to continually flood. After securing and documenting the artifacts, the preservation team began the tedious task of placing fallen stones back into place and repointing the structure. Once completed, the Lowry Mill site allows for a better understanding of the operation of the mill, its history, and the setting next to Euharlee’s famous covered bridge.
